Smoking Barrel is a compelling true story of how I made it through "the system" at a time when businesses were not interested in the people of color or women. I successfully navigated through the business community in Detroit, Michigan, and ultimately owned several prosperous businesses.

The book chronicles my life as a little girl from Alabama who while visiting her grandfather in Mississippi recalls him walking with a limp. As it turns out, grandfather was shot because he questioned a Carpetbagger regarding his property line.

The book goes on to describe the time she works from the Department of Commerce and the Board of Education. Included in the book are stories and antidotes on how I not only survived, but excelled in an environment that clearly did not want a minority or a woman in their ranks.

The book describes how to thrive as a business person, especially an entrepreneur. Included in this masterpiece are business trips, survival tactics, rules for success, reasons for failure, and my personal "Nazarisms." Smoking barrel cut to the chase and right into fundamental reasons why determination, incisive insights, and a great deal of tenacity will win every time. I triumphed over many obstacles and prejudices to make a better life for myself, my child, and for many others with whom I came in contact. The Detroit News, among others, has referred to Smoking Barrel as a successful guide book.

My book would be an excellent addition to the required list of textbooks for high school students in the Detroit Public Schools. Our young people need additional direction with regard to work ethics, interest, and information on just how to succeed in employment and life. We are at the millennium and these students must be prepared for the 21st Century. I feel that one way to prepare them is to provide a tool which they can take from classroom into the world of work. I am including a copy of my book and the promotional package with this letter and certainly hope that it will be considered as a supplementary resource.( Nazarene Childress-Brown -- (313)-567-8952)
